The expansion sends you to new regions of the planet Enoch. Not only a new story awaits, but also even more powerful loot and new facets of character progression.

In outriders (in the test, grade 7.0) People Can Fly and Square Enix sent you to the planet Enoch, where mankind wanted to make a fresh start. However, that went very badly because strange storms plunged everything into chaos on the supposedly life-friendly celestial body. The technology failed, mutated life forms terrorized the people and in the fight for scarce resources civil war broke out between the remnants of the government and the rebels. In addition, the people mutated by the storms, the Altered Ones, pose a threat of their own – fortunately your character has also become a powerful Altered One through the storm.
After the end of the 20-plus-hour campaign, the endgame consisted of expeditions – particularly challenging missions where the chance of the rarest loot increased at higher challenge levels. There were no seasons including passes or other feeding mechanisms poured out drop by drop to lure the players back, nor were there microtransactions.
The free upgrade New Horizons changed the distribution of loot about half a year after the release, added four new expeditions, removed the unpopular time limit from the endgame mode and also revised the balance, since everything previously depended too much on the DPS value for the late content , which discouraged experimenting with builds. With Worldslayer the first large, paid expansion for Outriders will be released on June 30, 2022. I was able to lend a hand at a digital play-off event even in the first hour of the add-on, which adds new content to the bloody looter shooter shooting booth in almost all areas.
First, our Outriders colored the snow of an icy area red. The weapons provided conveniently had mods that often froze opponents. |
Always trouble with the anomaly
In Worldslayer, the anomaly storms are now ramping up worse than ever (and the final expedition already put the main games in the eye of the storm). The storms are growing, which is accompanied by unpleasant phenomena. For example, that even flight mutants adapted to the extreme conditions of Enoch fall from the sky as blocks of ice.
You have three guesses as to who should fix it. So your Outrider travels to new zones in the campaign to find a solution to the problem. Fortunately, this requires less knowledge of thermophysics and anomaly lore, rather you have to hit human and monstrous opponents hard where it hurts in the usual manner. Ereshkigal will also stand in your way. The leader of the rebels is also an altered, with sinister agendas of her own. The new campaign should keep you busy for about ten hours, the new endgame a lot longer afterwards.
The new Pax skill tree for the Trickster class. |
Pimp my Outrider
I shot my way through ice landscapes and a fishing village with a ready-made trickster with a fellow technomancer. The fun with the powers and weapon mods quickly returned and there was also interesting loot to be found again. The enemies didn’t appear in such absurd numbers as in the expeditions, but they took damage well. World Slayer is revising the system of challenge levels, with which you have unlocked higher levels of difficulty but also better chances of rare loot. They are also replaced in the main game by Apocalypse tiers. The new Apocalypse difficulty levels 16 to 40 are reserved for Worldslayer owners.
Your Outriders can now advance up to level 40 in Worldslayer and the equipment level can then also be pimped up to level 75. In my session, I already earned some Ascension levels, with which I can distribute Ascension points in a new character window after reaching the maximum level, for example to make my own healing through dealt damage more effective or to increase the maximum HP a bit. There are a total of 200 Ascension levels, at which level you have maximally increased all available options in the four subcategories of anomaly, endurance, brutality and skill.
The new Pax skill tree, which exists separately from the regular skill tree but unlocks perks for synergy effects of your powers similar to this, goes deeper. However, you will not receive any new special maneuvers for the classes via the Pax skill tree. As you gain Ascension experience everywhere, Pax Points are tied to progression in the new Worldslayer content. The developers didn’t want to reveal anything about the new endgame mode Trials of Tarya Gratar, but it’s clear: With the new adjustment screws in character development, the long-term Ascension activation, the apocalypse ranks and new rare loot for hunting, people want to Can Fly throws you into a new long loot-and-level spiral. Worldslayer is also sold as a bundle that includes access to all main game content. Newcomers also have the option to create a new character at level 30 and use it to tackle Worldslayer content directly with veteran buddies. As an expansion pack, Worldslayer will cost owners of the main game 39.99 euros.
The Fischer boss made my life difficult at the end of the demo. |
The ghost in the fishing village
My Outrider visited the mentioned fishing village to find a boat. First, I and my co-op partner walked unmolested between the wooden shacks in the pouring rain, while we were told the scary story about the abandoned village, in which the murderous ghost of a fisherman is said to be haunted. After inspecting some unusable nutshells, a red signal rocket lights up the night and suddenly it’s swarming with rebels, which we take apart in typical fashion. Enemy types with new attack methods are not noticed.
Eventually, though, we end up facing the very real and living fisherman. The new boss cost us a few attempts. While we were able to dodge most of his attacks, if we weren’t careful, rebels holed up on the nearby dock, including two captains whose Anomaly attacks we couldn’t use next to the Fisherman’s broadsides. As a reward after the narrowly won victory, we received the first apocalypse weapons. They looked nice, but unfortunately I couldn’t experience their fighting power since we were at the end of the demo.

Opinion: Hagen Gehritz
After the New Horizon update smoothed out nicks in the endgame to allow for more build versatility, Worldslayer seems to be stepping it up a notch. The Pax skill tree is clearly more exciting for me than teasing out a few percentage points from various variables via Ascension over a long period of time – I’m not a min-max enough for that. In general, the question remains as to how well these new facets motivate people in the long term. The situation is different with the guns of the new rarity level Apocalypse. Since the mods were a huge fun factor in Outriders, I definitely want to get my hands on them.
I think it’s a shame that the classes weren’t each given a completely new special power. I haven’t noticed any new enemy types in my play session either. But right from the start of the campaign we went into two very different zones and we only defeated the big chunk and his henchmen at the end of the demo through teamwork. Even with the staging of his usual over-the-top story, the developers are not cooking on the back burner.
Worldslayer won’t bring any revolution for Outriders, but has good approaches to revitalize the fun-dull continuous shooting with more variety and a little more depth in the character progression.
OUTRIDERS: WORLDSLAYER
Preliminary pros & cons
- More variety with fresh zones and enemies
- Interesting new skill tree and even more powerful weapons
- Both new campaign and new endgame
- No new class or new powers for existing classes
- It remains to be seen whether new enemies not only look different, but also set fresh accents
Current assessment
With Worldslayer, People Can Fly is poised to bolster Outriders at every level with new content that will encourage veterans to try new rides, but also allow newcomers to jump right into the new content. However, after an hour you cannot estimate how well the theoretically appealing revitalization works in practice.
