A video showing a solar eclipse on Mars with the participation of its permanent satellite Phobos has appeared on the network. This event was written on the official NASA resources.
According to the source, the eclipse lasted about forty seconds. During this time, NASA’s Perseverance rover managed to focus and film the sun’s disk as Mars’ permanent moon Phobos passed through it. The picture was taken on the new generation Mastcam-Z camera, which is equipped with the rover.
Rachel Howson, a member of the Mastcam-Z team that remotely controls the camera, admitted that the video exceeded her expectations. “I knew that everything would be fine, but I didn’t expect everything to be so amazing,” she says.
For the first time, a solar eclipse on Mars was filmed in 2019 by the Curiosity rover – then Deimos, the second satellite of the red planet, covered the Sun.
But that video was much less clear and spectacular – now you can see it in all its details. NASA experts note that shooting with Perseverance, they see the details of the outline of Phobos, its crests and bumps. Now these observations will replenish the archive of knowledge about Mars.
