Amazon Echo Show 15: Largest Echo device with a crisis of meaning
The Echo Show 15 is an Echo Show with a 15.6-inch Full HD resolution screen. A start page with various widgets can be displayed on this. These include digital notes, calendar entries and streaming services. Each user can choose from various widgets, which can be freely arranged on the start page. The Echo Show 15 can be hung up using a wall bracket and is intended to serve as a digital control center for the smart home. If you want, you can mount the Echo Show 15 vertically or horizontally. A Linux distribution from Amazon works as the operating system, in which the user can install various Alexa skills and widgets. Inside, a specially developed ARM chipset Amazon AZ2 with quad-core processor provides propulsion. With this SoC, Alexa can use the camera to recognize who is currently using the Echo Show 15 and then display a specific user’s calendar, for example. This optional feature is called Visual ID.
The third generation of the Amazon Echo Show 10 is available for an RRP of just under 250 euros. Instead of imitating the design of a tube monitor, like the Echo Show 8 and 5 siblings, Amazon has opted for a different look for the Show 10. The 10-inch full HD touchscreen sits enthroned on a round speaker base. As a special feature, the display can automatically turn towards the speaker. For this purpose, Alexa, including microphones and webcam, should be able to record where the speaker is at the moment. With this automatic system, the comprehensibility for Alexa should be increased on the one hand and the visuality for the user should be increased on the other. However, the test shows that the follow function does not always work correctly. You should also be careful when choosing the location. Finally, the screen rotates automatically, so nothing should stand near the Echo Show 10 up to a certain radius. Conveniently, Amazon supplies illustrated instructions that also serve as a spacer. This makes it easy to find a suitable place. However, placing it near a wall unit is not recommended, since the Echo Show 10 occasionally interacted more with the wall unit than with the author of these lines. Apart from the rotatable screen, the Echo Show 10 knows how to convince with a powerful sound. Compared to the first generation, the sound is even more differentiated and is also more voluminous. If you value good sound from a smart speaker and also want a screen, you should take a closer look at the Echo Show 10.
Amazon already offers a smart speaker with an integrated display for just under 85 euros. This is the Echo Show 5 with a 5.5-inch touchscreen. At 5.5 inches, the touchscreen is even smaller than that of many smartphones. Set up in a room, some writings can hardly be recognized. The screen is simply too small and has a resolution of only 960 x 480 pixels. In terms of sound, the Echo Dot and the normal Echo are significantly better than the smallest Echo Show. Echo Show 8 & 5 compared
If you want to spend 130 euros, you get the larger Echo Show 8. In terms of appearance, the Echo Show 8 resembles an old tube monitor. This construction creates more sound volume, so that the soundscape can fill a small room with sound. After all, there are two drivers with 50 mm in the housing. In addition to the sound and the larger touchscreen, the Echo Show 8 (2nd gen) offers a webcam with 13 megapixels, so that you can use Skype in HD resolution, for example. As usual, Amazon installs numerous microphones that can also be used for video telephony in addition to Alexa. If you want to do without the camera, you can use a button on the device to slide a mechanical flap in front of the camera lens. Unfortunately, this flap is always kept in white, even if you have chosen the black-colored model.
