According to the latest news from foreign media, a new generation of MacBook Air may be unveiled at the upcoming WWDC, which is expected to be equipped with an M2 processor, but even this performance is a small upgrade.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst, said:The A16 chip equipped in this year’s iPhone 14 Pro series may be a small upgrade from the A15 Bionic of the iPhone 13 series. The M-series chips will not be upgraded significantly this year, and major upgrades will occur in 2023.

Ming-Chi Kuo said that since TSMC’s significantly better N3 and N4P manufacturing processes will not be available for mass production until 2023, the chip processes used by Apple this year may be N5P and N4.

Mr. Guo believes that N4 has no obvious advantage over N5P. N5P is the process currently used to manufacture the A15 bionic chip in the iPhone 13 series and iPad mini, so it is reported that Apple plans to stick to N5P on the A16 chip.

In terms of performance and efficiency, the improvement of the A16 chip over the A15 is “limited”. Apple still chose to name it “A16” more for marketing purposes.

In addition, Ming-Chi Kuo also corrected a rumor that the 2022 MacBook Air will retain the M1 chip instead of being equipped with an “M2”, so the rumors of the Shrimp Apple Pro may be related to a new version of the entry-level “M1”. Offering a mid-generation iteration of a device with a standard “M1” chip could help Apple buy time before releasing a Mac with an “M2” chip.
