While it won’t be officially available until the fall, the Pixel 7 is already on sale on the web. A working, unlocked prototype of Google’s smartphone was available on eBay.
Don’t ask Google to keep a secret. The Mountain View company has all the trouble in the world to prevent leaks around its Pixel products; this is confirmed once again. Formalized on the occasion of Google I/O 2022, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro will be available in the fall. The manufacturer hoped to pull the rug out from under leakers by showing its future smartphones, without however offering a complete presentation. Except for the new design showing the aluminum rear photo block, not much is known about this new vintage.
On the other hand, the American giant had doubtless not foreseen that its Pixel 7 ends up on sale on eBay. The ad first made an appearance on Reddit before going around the canvas, then disappearing. The seller claimed to have in his possession a prototype, functional and unlocked, of the Pixel 7 in its black “Obsidian” version. Photos confirm the design seen at the I/O conference, without telling us more about the smartphone.
After Google renders, “real” photos of the Pixel 7
Like the official renderings of Google, we can see the presence of a shiny glass back and the new aluminum headband. This element, which caused a lot of ink to flow when the Pixel 6 was announced, continues to extend across the entire width and accommodates the photo block. We also see that Google has indeed abandoned the two-tone treatment on the back.
The announcement states that the device has 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The model number is GVU6C and it was sold as is “without any guarantee”. This prototype was to be shipped from McKinney, Texas (USA). More troubling, we can glimpse what appears to be a Pixel 7 Pro in the reflection of the Pixel 7 in one of the images.
On the software side, it is indicated that the smartphone is working already under Android 13 and that “Pixel apps are in development”. On the other hand, nothing is known about the chip that drives this future device. Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh has already indicated that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will feature a second-generation Google Tensor SoC.
For the record, the announcement specifies that the prototype is a “Stormy Black” version. Google is using this colorway for the current generation and has already confirmed the colors for these upcoming Pixels. The Pixel 7 will be available in black (Obsidian), white (Snow) and lemon yellow (Lemongrass). As for the Pixel 7 Pro, it replaces lemon yellow with a dark green called “Hazel”.
This is the second time in a few weeks that Google has found itself at the heart of a case of this type. We remember that a prototype of the Pixel Watch was found in a restaurant; a few days before its official announcement.
