Several sources report that Apple has probably registered the “realityOS” brand in a wide range of markets. Since the beginning of the year, it has been speculated that Apple’s investment in VR / AR will be driven by an operating system known as “realityOS”.

The realityOS trademark has not been registered directly by Apple. Instead, it is a completely unknown company, Realityo Systems LLC, that registered the trademark. However, several analysts believe that it is a company that Apple created solely to register the brand realityOS. Apple has previously created the company Yosemite Research LLC, which was used, among other things, to register trademarks for different versions of macOS. As a matter of fact, Yosemite Research and Realityo Systems seem to share a physical address. At the same address is also the company Corporation Trust Center, which has previously helped Apple with brand issues, writes 9to5Mac.

Apple has largely never officially talked about its investment in VR and AR. Soon, however, it’s time for Apple’s developer conference WWDC and maybe we can find out a little more about Apple’s VR / AR headset then. WWDC kicks off on Monday 6 June and runs until Friday 10 June.

Apple reinvents reality

As early as 2017, Bloomberg reported that Apple was working on something called “rOS” and now developers have found some references to realityOS in Apple’s codes. It remains to be seen if, when and how we will see realityOS officially. It was long rumored that Apple would show off its VR / AR headset already this year, but according to the latest information that says that Apple has encountered problems with the hardware, it seems more and more unlikely.

And an AR headset 2023

There has long been talk that Apple is developing some kind of headset or glasses for augmented reality. Now, however, the news agency Bloomberg states that Apple has first intended to release a VR headset before releasing any AR product. According to Bloomberg’s sources, Apple’s VR headset currently goes by the code name “N301” and is intended for watching movies, games and presentations in virtual reality. It is described as a competitor to VR headsets from Oculus, HTC and Sony but is believed to be significantly much more expensive than these. The N301 is described as being at the prototype stage and being about the size of an Oculus Quest. Sometime in 2022, Apple is expected to release its VR headset, according to Bloomberg sources. It is also stated that Apple continues to develop an AR headset and that this goes by the code name “N421”. It is believed that Apple plans to release on the market sometime in 2023.

Reputation Apple’s former hardware manager will be VR / AR manager at Apple

Dan Riccio will direct the development of future VR / AR headsets

Late last month, Apple announced that its senior vice president of hardware engineering, Dan Riccio, would go ahead and lead a new unknown project at Apple. Now the news agency Bloomberg states that Riccio will be responsible for the work with Apple’s reputed VR / AR headset. Apple itself has not confirmed that it is actually developing any type of VR / AR headset, but data that has been leaked in recent years indicates that this is the case. Just recently, information has been leaked that this is a very advanced VR headset with 8K resolution that can cost as much as 3000 dollars. According to Bloomberg, over a thousand people at Apple will be involved in the development of the whole thing. When we can see a first version of Apple’s VR / AR headset, like so much else when it comes to Apple’s future products, is unclear. In any case, it is rumored that such a thing may appear sometime in 2022.
