Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off Morbid should have built on the success of the Marvel Spider Man. But the film starring Jared Leto as the vampire antihero has mostly just disastrous reviews can get. A sequel is actually almost impossible in such a situation. Or maybe not? Because a meme could have ensured that Sony senses a hype about its flop film and accordingly wants to deliver a second look.
CNN reports on Morbius 2?
Lately some are leading morbius memes to the fear that Sony could announce a sequel. Thanks to a flood of memes on social media, the misinformation was spread that a Sequel to Morbius was announced. Apparently it all started last weekend with one fake CNN headlinewhich said that Sony Morbid 2 announced for Paramount+ and Disney Plus.
For those who are scared now: No, Sony Pictures still has no green light for a Morbius sequel given. If you think about it for a moment, it also doesn’t make sense that Sony would want to release a film on Paramount+ as well as on Disney Plus. Under the “article” it also states that this is a review. Here at the latest one can assume that it is a manipulated headline of the original review of the film for CNN.
A misunderstood masterpiece
The article in question seems to have convinced some people that the film will be made, though. Or they just pretend to be convinced to have fun, which is not far off the mark in today’s Internet culture. In any case, there has been a sudden increase in engagement with the film on social media. A flood of memes and the hashtag “It’s Morbin’ Time” have taken on a life of their own and some are even calling the film directed by Daniel Espinosa as “misunderstood masterpiece”.
a disease (buy now ) 2 is certainly not entirely out of the question, but Sony’s justification for it must be really good. While the film is a downright meme phenomenon, it didn’t do well in theaters. It didn’t come anywhere near the $100 million mark in the US and “only” grossed $163 million worldwide. The cost of the film combined with the marketing is likely to mean a loss for Sony and will certainly make the studio think twice about going ahead with it. Hopefully no memes will change that either.
