Windows History: The window to the PC world
Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico before the company moved to Redmond, Washington, in 1986. To date, there have only been three different CEOs at Microsoft. In 2000, founder Gates was succeeded by current basketball club owner Steve Ballmer. Ballmer was Microsoft’s first manager in 1980. Satya Nadella has been the new CEO at Microsoft since 2014, after the Indian, who emigrated to the USA, had previously successfully headed the cloud division. The following special will illuminate the history of one of the company’s most famous software products. We are talking about the Windows operating system.

Windows has been the operating system for personal computers developed by Microsoft since 1985. The history of Windows begins in 1985 with version 1.0. Microsoft wanted to simplify operation with a “graphical add-on” to MS-DOS, which dominated the market at the time. However, Windows 1.0 did not break through on the market, and version 2 was only used by a few corporate customers, but was not successful.

It was only with Windows 3.1, which was released on April 6, 1992, that Microsoft made its breakthrough in the operating system market. Scalable TrueType fonts were available for the first time, making the OS a direct competitor for Apple, since Windows could be used for desktop publishing of books and magazines, for example. In addition, the ease of use has been increased by “drag-and-drop” including mouse control. DOS-based Windows 3.1 goes down in history as the first successful Windows, even though Windows was used almost exclusively in the business environment at the time.
