I’m not sure when password management services moved from a consumer concept to an enterprise tool, but I’m glad it happened. For years, IT departments have advised users to use complex passwords that don’t repeat themselves. However, there were no solutions in this council that would help people manage them properly. Today, tools that were previously aimed at consumers now have powerful offerings for businesses. For IT departments looking to keep passwords secure, both 1Password and LastPass offer solid solutions.
About Apple@Work: Bradley Chambers managed the corporate IT network from 2009 to 2021. Through his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, MDM, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, hundreds of Macs and hundreds of iPads, Bradley will talk about how Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, educate users , tell stories from the IT management trenches and ways Apple can improve its products for IT departments.
Both of these applications help users create, manage and use complex passwords at a high level. The idea of creating a very strong super password to unlock the rest of your passwords is much easier than trying to remember hundreds of accounts. Since the world has moved away from Active Directory in everything, password management has become a problem. Personally, I have been using 1Password since the company launched the product. I also switched to the Families plan right after it launched. Personally, I had a solution, and now I use a business plan.
For years, non-professional users have found it difficult to manage their passwords. Some people have used Chrome’s built-in sync tool while others have used Safari. While these solutions are acceptable for home use, they certainly don’t scale to large enterprise users. 1Password and LastPass now have solutions for everyone from home users to large businesses. Features such as single sign-on integration, data encryption, account recovery, multi-factor authentication management, audit trails, and password sharing solve problems with any platform.
1Password also makes impressive developer tools. In the upcoming 1Password 8 service/app, it integrates password management, SSH keys, and infrastructure secrets.
Use 1Password CLI features and dynamically inject secrets from 1Password at runtime without manual intervention. While this may not be something every 1Password user will use, it certainly shows that they are pursuing complex corporate needs.

To sum up: cross-platform support makes it easy to use.
Employees work across macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, so having robust apps built-in for each platform with easy background sync is a game-changer in terms of security. As I mentioned earlier, IT professionals have long penalized users for weak passwords, which are then reused across services.
Unfortunately, since Apple and Google have rid enterprises of everything related to the Active Directory model, they have not implemented strong password management. They didn’t implement anything because there were no good solutions on the market. Now that 1Password and Lastpass offer enterprise-class solutions with consumer-level ease of use, every business using Apple products should consider this. Yes, Safari Keychain is good, but it’s not enterprise-grade password management.
