According to Mark Gurman of BloombergiPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max can get Always-On Display to show the time and notifications on the lock screen.
In his latest newsletter Gurman talked about some of the changes coming this year to iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, tvOS 16, and macOS 13 at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Among the new features in iOS 16 is an improved lock screen with “wallpapers that have widget-like capabilities.” Lock screen improvements reportedly set the stage for future features, including an always-on mode. Gurman said that iOS 16 includes “future support” for the always-on lock screen.
Models are rumored iPhone 13 Pro were supposed to have an always-on display last year, but this feature was canceled before the devices were released in September 2021. Gurman claims that Apple is continuing to work on this feature, and is currently developing an “always-on mode” for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, providing access to “quick view information like the new Apple Watch.”
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max were the first iPhones to feature 120Hz ProMotion displays, made possible by the introduction of variable refresh rate LTPO matrix technology. The current ProMotion displays from the iPhone are limited to screen refresh rates of 10Hz to 120Hz. On the other hand, LPTO panels used by companies such as Oppo and Samsung can cut down to 1Hz when viewing a static image or when the device is inactive.
Display analyst Ross Young recently said he “expects” the ProMotion displays used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to be able to truncate to a minimum of 1Hz, thereby removing a hardware limitation that prevents Apple from implementing the always-on feature. display on iPhone 13 Pro. However, Gurman cautioned that the feature might not arrive in September in time for the announcement of the iPhone 14 lineup.
