Last week, a number of outraged developers reported how their older apps have been removed from the App Store. The developers received an email from Apple and a month to release an update – far too little, the developers complained.
Apple has heard the complaints and has now published a statement on its developer portal, where it writes that the process of automatically deleting old apps began in 2016 and is not a new venture recently.
To be automatically removed, apps must meet the following criteria:
- The app has not been updated in the last three years.
- The app is downloaded “extremely rarely” or never downloaded from the store.
To give the developers who want to keep their old apps in the store after all, Apple will now give a 90-day deadline instead of 30 as before. However, it will hardly help those developers whose apps can no longer be compiled with the latest version of Xcode and must be rewritten from scratch.
