Today, renewable energy is considered the energy of the future, and in this field, solar energy is a star. Already used in many different ways, a Dutch start-up came up with the idea of inventing an electric car that runs on solar energy. And two years after the launch of the project, the vehicle is finally marketed.

A combo between a moped and an electric car

It was in 2019 that the Dutch start-up Squad Mobility launched its project to produce and market a small electric car that runs on solar energy. After three years of development, the microcar will soon be available on the market. Called Squad Solar City Car, this tiny two-seater car was designed by Robert Hoevers and Chris Klok, two former employees of the company specializing in the design of electric vehicles, Lightyear.

As its name suggests, the Squad is a vehicle intended for individuals for their travels in urban areas. Different from a conventional car, the Squad is as easy to drive as a moped, but offers the same level of comfort and safety as its four-wheeled peers. In addition to ease of driving, comfort and safety, this microcar has many other advantages over traditional cars. In particular, it is more mobile, easier to park, more economical, more ecological and much more affordable compared to other city vehicles.

As for its various properties, the Squad can carry two people in a fairly spacious cabin that also has storage space and a workstation that can accommodate a laptop. While driving the Squad differs from driving a car, this little vehicle is still equipped with all the classic car features like doors, windows, windshield wipers and lights. Anyway, in its overall design, the Squad looks much more like a golf cart than an actual automobile.

The Squads will be rolling all over Europe from 2023

Regarding its technical and mechanical features, the Squad is equipped with solar panels on its roof, offering up to 20 kilometers of autonomy. But its actual range is around 100 kilometers thanks to the portable lithium-ion batteries the car is also equipped with. Since the car has solar panels, it does not need to be recharged at charging stations, unlike other electric vehicles. The batteries can still be detached and recharged using a standard 220 volt socket.

As for its speed, the Squad’s two 2 kilowatt rear motors allow it to have a top speed of 45 kilometers per hour. Squad Mobility has officially announced that the car will be available in 2023. Pre-orders are already open and the base price has been set at 6,250 euros excluding taxes for the basic model. For the fully equipped model, the price of the Squad has been set at 9,300 euros excluding taxes. The company also plans to launch a rental service for its new vehicle, it announced in a statement.
