When Apple’s new Studio Display was released last month, many people were quick to point out that the panel is nearly identical to the one Apple has been using on the 27-inch iMac since 2014. Due to the similarities between the two, YouTuber Luke Miani decided to see if he could turn an old iMac into a studio display.

Can an iMac be turned into a studio display?

Miani explains:

Apple’s new Studio Display is a pretty interesting product, but at $1,599, that’s maybe a bad price. But since there are very few other 5K displays at 27 inches, this is the only option for some. Up to this day. If you don’t feel like spending $1,600 on an Apple Studio Display, you can make your own!

The obvious solution here would be to use Target Display Mode, which allows you to use your iMac as an external display for another Mac. However, Apple ended support for this feature with the release of macOS Mojave, and Retina iMac was never supported by this feature.

With that in mind, Miani decided to turn a 2014 iMac into a standalone, full-featured $600 external display. This process involved completely gutting the iMac, which you need to do by removing the front panel of the iMac itself. After this complex process was completed, Miani had to look for a suitable conversion board that would actually allow the iMac to be connected.

The finished product is impressive. There’s even USB-C connectivity, and the iMac’s built-in webcam is fully functional. The total cost of this project was $829, which is about half the cost of Studio Display. You’re missing out on some features, like P3 color gamut support, but that’s impressive for less than $1,000.
