Do not rush to update, there are pitfalls!
On the evening of June 6 at 20:00 Moscow time, the WWDC 2022 developer event in the USA will begin, where Apple will announce new firmware for its devices: iOS 16, watchOS 9, iPadOS 16, tvOS 16, macOS 13 Mammoth.
We cannot know for sure what will happen in iOS 16, but we have collected all the insiders for you in the hope that many of them will come true.
What’s new in iOS 16
- New flagship iPhone 14 models Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max get the “Always On Display” feature. This means that even on a locked iPhone, you can watch the time, possibly notifications, and some other data. All this will be customizable in iOS 16.
- Added interactive widgets.
- A complete redesign of all the icons of standard applications in iOS 16 is not expected, but there may be minor changes. It’s sad to look at the same icons year after year, but older iPhone owners admire the same icons on their iPhone display as new iPhone owners. In fact, since 2014, the design of iOS has not changed.
- New standalone Apple Classics app for classical music.
- New features in the Health app.
- Contactless payment “Tap to Pay” – money transfer by iPhones. When one owner of the iPhone issues an invoice to another owner of the iPhone with a light touch and the latter sends the money with a touch of consent. In the Russian Federation, the service is unlikely to work because it is tied to banks, and in Russia now is the time of sanctions.
- New stock apps could complement iOS 16.
- Subtitles in real time. Subtitles can be enabled for any playing audio or video file. A very convenient feature, but it is unlikely that it will support the Russian language immediately after the release of iOS 16. Although everything is possible. There may also be a hardware limitation. Most likely, subtitles will be supported on iPhones from the 11th model range and higher.
- The ability to manually set icons for certain applications, both from a set of pre-installed and from arbitrary ones.
- Duplicate the screen of a paired Apple Watch on the iPhone display. For the convenience of smartwatch control. Most likely, it will not support all current Apple Watches, but starting from Series 6. By the way, the new watchOS 9 (released in September 2022) will no longer support Apple Watch Series 3, popular in Russia.
- Recognition of obstacles for visually impaired people. Obviously, such a feature will require LiDAR, which is only in the iPhone 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max and will still be in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The obstacle recognition function based on artificial intelligence and machine learning recognizes an obstacle and if it is, for example, a door, it will tell you where the handle is and in which direction it opens.
- New themes and fine-tuning for reading e-books on iPhone.
- Function of recognition of obvious sounds. There are commonplace sounds like meowing, doorbell, siren howling, etc., which the iPhone will now be able to recognize and send the notification you need. The feature will need tweaking and “training” for more accurate operation.
- “Focus” on iPhone will receive new advanced settings options and at the same time, in terms of ease of use, it will become “closer to the people.”
- There may be a new standalone app for pairing and setting up Apple accessories: Apple Watch, AirPods, and AirTag.

Expected release date for iOS 16
iOS 16 will be preliminarily released from September 13 to 20, 2022.
Before that, beta versions of iOS 16 firmware will be released all summer 2022, which we will install on editorial iPhones and unsubscribe about innovations.
Don’t rush to install iOS 16
Firstly, all summer 2022 we will be testing the iOS 16 firmware and writing on the site about everything we see. If you install iOS 16 beta “in the heat of the moment” and out of great curiosity, then there may also be problems with applications running on the iPhone. Think about the Yandex Navigator app, which did not work correctly on iOS 14 beta. Do you need it?
Secondly, if the necessary applications are installed and working on your iPhone that are no longer in the App Store (for example, Sberbank Online, Alfa-Bank, etc.), then with a high probability on iOS 16 they will not work correctly or with failures. Since these applications are “not allowed” in the App Store, no one will modify them for compatibility with iOS 16. Unless they use the method of VTB Bank, which released several VTB Online clone applications on behalf of an organization that did not fall under sanctions. And the last such application is a clone called Unicom Prime Balance at the end of May 2022 was on the 4th place in the rating of free applications in the Russian App Store. But you should not count on this, since most of the applications removed from the App Store did not follow this path.
