Reggie Fils-Aimé, ex COO of Nintendo of Americarecently spoke on the subject as part of the SXSW 2022 event Blockchain spoken. Fils-Aimé, who many may know from the “My Body is ready” memes, described himself as a “believer” in terms of blockchain technology. Considering that players often associate absolutely nothing positive with crypto, blockchain or NFTs, this commitment seems bizarre. After all, companies like Ubisoft have felt just how big dislike of this topic on the part of its own customers. So what fascinates Reggie Fils-Aimé about blockchain?
Why not sell the Animal Crossing island?
Fils-Aimé generally finds blockchain to be a more interesting technology. If you’re not familiar with terms like blockchain, crypto, mining or NFTs, we can recommend our related article. In addition, Reggie expressed himself as a fan of “play-to-own” concepts.
From his point of view, it is desirable to be able to monetize elements from games after a lot of time has been invested. As a specific example, Reggie named his island that he built in the current Animal Crossing. According to him, being able to resell this island for money would be a fantastic opportunity.
And for just such a purpose, blockchain technology would be very helpful. In the same breath, Fils-Aimé emphasized that the added value for the players must be the priority. “In the end it has to be good for the player. But I see an opportunity.“
About the sense and nonsense of the statements
Basically, one has to ask the question whether Mr. Fils-Aimé is aware that the sale of digital objects in video games has not only been possible since blockchain technology and discussions around NFTs and crypto. The enthusiasm for Reggie’s current statements should be correspondingly low. Apart from that, Nintendo of America currently sees itself with numerous Allegations in dealing with employees confronted.
