In less than six months, Apple will be announcing the upcoming Apple Watch Series 8. Rumors are a bit thin so far, but there are some features that will most likely be available in this new generation of smartwatches. Read on as we round up four of the ones we expect to see in the Apple Watch Series 8.

Same screen sizes as previous models

Apple has changed the screen size of the Apple Watch quite consistently. The original Apple Watch up to Series 3 had 38mm and 42mm options, Series 4 through Series 6 had 40mm and 44mm options, and from Series 7 onwards, 41mm and 45mm options.

We expect Apple to keep the same screen sizes in the Apple Watch Series 8 as in the Apple Watch Series 7. After analysts and insiders wrongly predicted the new Series 7 design, I don’t think anyone would say that Apple will radically change how the upcoming Apple Watch Series 8 will look like.

At least the Apple Watch Series 8 will have a new sensor

For now, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have predicted that the Apple Watch Series 8 will finally have a new sensor. Both publications and analysts say a body temperature sensor is in development.

WSJ: “The sensor’s planned use in 2022 will be for fertility planning, people say, giving women clues about where they are in their ovulation cycle.”

By early 2022, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that “body temperature has been on the roadmap for this year, but talk has slowed down about it lately.” While this does not mean that Apple has abandoned its plans to release this new sensor, we still need to wait for new reports to make sure this feature will actually be released.

Best Processor

After no processor update for Series 7, it looks like Apple is preparing a new S8 SoC for the Apple Watch Series 8, bringing “major updates to activity tracking” with “faster chips across the board”, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

I think this year will be the biggest in the history of the Apple Watch since the original model. This fall, I’m looking for three new models: Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch, designed for extreme sports. I wouldn’t expect any major new health sensors this year other than the possible inclusion of the oft-discussed body temperature feature. But stay tuned for major activity tracking updates and faster chips across the board. In addition, the Apple Watch Series 3 may finally be retired.

Best sleep tracking technology

After years of waiting, Apple has finally introduced a built-in solution for those who love to track their sleep. Unfortunately, the stock app isn’t as good as the third-party options.

With that in mind, the Wall Street Journal reports that the Apple Watch Series 8 could have new sleep tracking features, including the ability to detect advanced sleep patterns and sleep apnea. The publication says that one of Apple’s concerns in terms of expanding sleep tracking capabilities is battery life.

Conclusion

For now, these are some of the features that users can really look forward to in the new Apple Watch Series 8. Of course, we’ll get a better look at future features with the watchOS 9 preview in June during WWDC 2022.
