IT House May 29 news, Qualcomm CFO said at the JPMorgan Chase JPM conference that it will use Intel’s technology for product foundry under suitable commercial terms.
According to reports, Intel 18A (TSMC N2 alternative) is a solution proposed by Intel to Qualcomm. Intel claims to have partnered with 5 core customers, and Qualcomm is likely to be one of them.
Qualcomm said they have done well in the wave of foundry price hikes over the past few years. They believe a diversified foundry strategy would be helpful. Second, Qualcomm has been able to address this from a margin perspective. So Qualcomm’s strategy going forward will remain the same and will continue to do what they have already done.
In the long run, we may be one of the few large semiconductor companies that has a lead in dual sourcing. We’ve used TSMC, we’ve used Samsung, and our order counts on both will keep changing over time. There is no fundamental change in the strategy, right?
We are happy to see Intel. I mean, if they execute the technology roadmap well and can offer us their technology on the right commercial terms, we’d be interested in them as well. So you should expect us to work with all of the leading foundry suppliers and we have done a good balance of technical and commercial terms before.
As for when the supply chain might return to normal, he said Qualcomm has been adamant that supply will improve in the second half of 2022, and is still holding the same view later this year. A more important consideration, he stressed, is aligning supply with demand.
IT House has reported that it was previously reported that Intel will use the future launch 20A process technologyto make Qualcomm chips, but did not disclose which Qualcomm products it would make or when the first chips would be available.
It is reported that Intel’s 20A process is scheduled for Released in 2024, it will introduce a new transistor architecture RibbonFET. In addition to Qualcomm, Amazon’s cloud computing service AWS will also work with Intel’s foundry services to use Intel’s packaging solutions, but Intel does not directly produce chips for Amazon.
Intel also said the company expects to regain its chip-making lead in 2025, and announced plans to roll out the next four years. 5 process development stagesincluding 10nm, 7nm, 4nm, 3nm and 20A.
