Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, which owns streaming service Peacock, has reported first-quarter 2022 earnings. In today’s earnings report, Peacock’s paid subscribers grew by 4 million subscribers, up 40% from the end of 2021. Of the 28 million current subscribers, 13 million are paid subscribers, up 9 million from last quarter.

During a conference call, Comcast CEO and Chairman Brian Roberts said that the number of users of the streaming platform has increased by 25% compared to last year. However, the company does not expect this growth to continue.

We expect more modest subscriber growth until we get to the second half of this year. Our fourth quarter should be fantastic, with sporting events like Sunday Night Football, the Premier League and the World Cup.

The streaming platform is making some changes to its service this year. On Sundays in May, Peacock will broadcast 18 Major League Baseball games. Apple TV+ also added MLB games to its lineup, noting content viewers love watching sports on their streaming services. In addition, NBC shows will become exclusive to the platform this fall, and Hulu will leave the service.

News of this growth also came after Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers this quarter. The company cited competition among other streaming platforms as one of the reasons for the slowdown. With competitors adding sports to their programming, should Netflix do the same to make a comeback?
