Apple today launched a new self-repair program that allows US iPhone buyers access to parts and manuals they can use to repair their devices, starting with the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone SE 3. Are you going? use this new program?

With Apple’s new Self Repair Program, iPhone users can repair components including the display, battery, and camera. Later this year, the company will also make parts available for the M1 Mac.

The tools and parts available at the self-service store are similar to those available to Apple repair crews. A complete set of tools can be rented for a week for $49. These tool kits include the necessary press, bits, guards and other supplies needed to complete a professional repair. Individual tools can also be purchased separately for storage.

As explained earlier today, parts prices vary by repair and device type. For example, an iPhone 13 Pro display repair kit costs $269. The battery pack costs $71. For context, you can have your iPhone battery serviced through Apple for a little less—as little as $69. Apple’s iPhone 13 screen replacement service costs $279, just $10 more than self-service.

iFixit also praised Apple’s Self Service Repair program, although the company believes it falls short of repair eligibility goals as independent stores cannot purchase key parts without an iPhone serial number or IMEI.

The biggest problem? Apple is doubling down on its part-pairing strategy by allowing only very limited repairs permitted by the serial number. You cannot purchase key parts without a serial number or IMEI. If you’re using a replacement part, you’ll get an “unverifiable” warning. This strategy limits third-party repair options through loss of function and scare tactics, and can drastically limit opportunities for recyclers and reclaimers, reducing the circular economy.

In addition, Apple is also warning customers that if they don’t repair their iPhone correctly, AppleCare won’t fix the new problem.
