The PS5 sells 1,000 units a minute in North America, while the PS4 sold just six consoles a minute a year after its launch. It’s a significant difference. However, it is worthwhile to compare the starting positions with each other.
Due to the enormous supply shortage, the PS5 is a coveted piece of hardware, whose availability in stores almost equals the frequency of a Yeti sighting. And as soon as one or the other online retailer is able to resume sales for a short time, the available consoles are sold out faster than grandma’s rhubarb cake.
It’s a scenario that Sony included in the last company report. In it, the Japanese point out that the PS5 was able to sell around 1,000 units per minute in the USA – or 80,000 copies within 82 minutes – as soon as it became available. It is an “unprecedented demand”.
The PS4 took nine days to do this
To substantiate the success, a comparison was made with the PS4, which sold only six copies per minute during the comparable period of its product cycle. Nine days were needed for the 80,000 copies of the PS4.
In the case of the PS5, console sales tend to be concentrated within a few minutes before players sometimes have to wait weeks for the next drop. The rush is correspondingly high in this short period of time. Everyone knows that the consoles are sold out quickly and that scalpers are also involved.
In the embedded statistics, Sony points out that three different sales events from leading US retailers were evaluated as the basis for the “1,000 consoles per minute”. If we interpret the statistics correctly, those 80,000 copies were sold within 82 minutes. In order to classify this number correctly and to be able to compare it with the PS4, the period until the next drop would also have to be taken into account.

Or the other way around: If we extrapolated the 1,000 PS5 sales per minute in a milkmaid calculation to the period that Sony uses for the PS4, it would be almost 13 million sales after 9 days, after a year of unbroken availability and demand more than 155 million sold Consoles – and only at the three dealers.
The reality, of course, looks different: Sony has until the end of the past fiscal quarter more than 19 million PS5 sold. In the comparison period of the PS4 it was already more than 20 million sales. The company expects to add another 18 million PS5 consoles in the current fiscal year, which gives hope for wider availability.

In the integrated graphics, Sony also takes on the interest of the players. According to this, in November 2014, around 28 percent of North American participants in a survey said they were interested in buying a PlayStation. In November 2021, a year after the launch of the PS5, it was 55 percent.
