Freightliner will soon start series production of the electric truck Ecascadia. Now American Sysco wants to buy up to 800 copies.

In early May, Daimler Truck-owned Freightliner presented the production version of the Ecascadia electric truck, a Class 8 trailer tractor according to the American categorization. It is thus the same type of vehicle as the upcoming Tesla Semi.

The American food giant Sysco Corporation, one of the world’s largest suppliers to restaurants and hospitals, among other places, now wants to buy up to 800 vehicles. A (non-binding) letter of intent has been concluded, Daimler Truck announces in a press release.

The first vehicles will begin delivery later this year and the last in 2026. The potential deal is a step towards Sysco’s goal of electrifying 35 percent of its US fleet by 2030.

438 kWh battery

Ecascadia has a range of up to 370 kilometers with the largest battery of 438 kWh. Two more battery options are offered, 195 and 291 kWh respectively.

The driveline stands for Detroit Epowertrain. The truck can be purchased with either one or two e-axles, where the tooth alternative offers higher power (up to 350 kW) but a slightly shorter range. With tandem axle and full load, the crew weighs up to 37.2 tons.

Charging the battery from empty to full takes between one and a half and six hours, depending on the battery size and charging speed. Up to 270 kW charging power is possible if two charging ports are used.

Freightliner plans to begin series production of Ecascadia later this year.
