This is the first time humanity has had the chance to limit global warming below 2°C, according to the first in-depth analysis of net zero commitments made by nations at the UN COP26 climate summit in December. The probability was primarily oriented towards the increase in temperature, which would have led to quite serious impacts on the world. But for this to happen, all nations must meet their commitments on time and in full. Admittedly, for some countries, this process will only be possible if they obtain the financial and technical support they need.

Keeping global warming below 2°C, an achievable goal if all countries meet their commitments

The world is already facing new heatwaves, floods and intensifying storms as a result of global warming that is caused by humanity’s emissions to date. Experts had predicted that even worse scenarios would be to come if no one took the necessary action. Even though this seems like great news, everyone is going to have to fulfill their objective. Above all, the countries responsible for 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions must respect their commitments.

However, there is bad news. It would seem that it is difficult to reach the global emission reduction targets that have been set by 2030. The peak is far from being maintained below the set 1.5°C. Currently, the chances of doing so are only 10%, reports The Guardian.

The target that has been set for 2030 seems difficult to achieve

Climate policies that are in effect right now are expected to bring the peak down to around 2.6°C. For now, massive weather damage is to be expected worldwide. The commitment that has been put in place should make it possible to bring the peak down to 2.4°C. To limit global warming to 1.5°C, we will have to reduce CO emissions2 45% compared to 2010. Countries will have to react quickly because this objective could become out of reach.

It is easy to set objectives for the years to come, but the hardest thing is to put in place a policy that is effective. Moreover, we must not forget the tension that currently exists between Russia and Ukraine. Global cooperation is currently under severe strain. To achieve the planned objective, everyone will have to make the effort to no longer depend on fossil fuels.

Many policies could have immediate or short-term effects on the energy and climate crises. Humanity can indeed resort to accelerating the deployment of renewable energies and electric vehicles and above all stop the evacuation of methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Everyone will have to bring their share of work if humanity is to hope for a healthier future.
