Beijing time on the evening of April 27th, according to reports, streaming video service Netflix announced today,Multiple film deals have been struck with Japanese animation studio Studio Colorido. The move comes as Netflix increases its anime offerings and looks to Asia for growth.
According to the agreement,Netflix to co-produce three films with Studio Colorido,inIncluding Drifting Home, which premieres in September. The film will also premiere in U.S. theaters.
Anime has already proven attractive to Netflix, watched by nearly 90 percent of users in Japan and globally, with half watching it last year, and rivals such as Amazon and Disney are racing to offer such content.
Currently, Netflix is investing more deeply in original anime. Its appeal is undeniable, with 90% of Netflix’s Japanese subscribers and 50% of global subscribers watching the anime last year. Competitors such as Amazon and Disney are also racing to offer such content.
“In order to win in the global market, we must first win locally (in Japan),” said Kaata Sakamoto, Netflix’s vice president of content for the Japanese market.
In the first quarter of this year,Netflix suffers first subscriber loss in more than a decadewhile the Asia-Pacific region is the only bright spot, users continue to grow.
