Microsoft has confirmed ongoing work on a streaming box. However, the previous version was once again thrown overboard. The findings are to be used for a new approach.
Microsoft regularly emphasizes that consoles remain an important part of the Xbox division. At the same time, the company hopes to reach billions of people as Xbox Game Pass and cloud services continue to expand.
An estimated 50 million copies of the Xbox One were sold in its lifetime, which makes it clear that the consoles will become increasingly irrelevant if the Redmond-based company’s plans work out.
Earlier this month, rumors circulated that Xbox was working on a stick similar to Google Stadia. Windows Central has since learned that the device still exists, but Microsoft has decided to take a slightly different approach.
Microsoft confirms streaming device
A Microsoft spokesman confirmed the Windows Central report as follows. “Our vision for Xbox cloud gaming is unwavering. Our goal is to enable people to play the games they want, on the devices they want, wherever they want.”
The company, as confirmed last year, is working on a game streaming device, codenamed Keystone, that “can be plugged into any TV or monitor without the need for a console.”
However, Microsoft has decided not to pursue the “current version of the Keystone device any further”. Instead, the Redmonders want to “use the insights and focus efforts on a new approach.” This should give Microsoft the opportunity to “make Xbox Cloud Gaming available to more players around the world” in the future.
Noisy Windows Central Keystone has been in development for a number of years and Microsoft continues to finalize the functionality of the product.
However, such a device is likely to become increasingly obsolete, because more and more TVs have the option of streaming content via a simple app. This could that’s what it said recentlyto be established sometime in the next twelve months.
