Sony wants to establish even more new brands in the coming years and hopes for increasing earnings. The PS4, on the other hand, could soon end up on the sidelines.

Sony doesn’t just invest in new studios or in partnerships. The actual development of video games is not neglected either. However, the budget is to be divided up more and more differently in the coming years.

After the PS5 manufacturer has focused primarily on established brands in recent years and tried less often to experiment with new brands, the share of new IPs should be 50 percent in about three to four years.

In fiscal 2019, which ended March 2020, PlayStation Studios invested 23 percent of development budgets in new brands and 77 percent in existing franchises. In the current fiscal year, the share of the new brands is expected to rise to 34 percent, before a split of 50 to 50 is forecast for the 2025 fiscal year. SIE CEO Jim Ryan referred to this in the latest company report.

Sony expects significant returns from this strategy

“New intellectual property rights” are the lifeblood of the entire entertainment industry. And Sony Interactive Entertainment wants to significantly increase spending in this area. “From less than a quarter of total spend in FY2019, we will increase that share to 50 percent of a much larger number by FY2025, an investment that we expect to yield significant returns in the second half of this decade,” like Ryan.

Earlier, Ryan announced that by fiscal 2025, Sony expects half of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s releases will take place on PC and mobile devices.

The PS4, on the other hand, is nearing the end of its lifespan. Sony could stop producing new last-gen games in as little as three years. That’s according to a chart released during the company’s most recent business segment briefing.

Accordingly, by 2025, the mentioned 50 percent of the titles will be available for the PS5, 30 percent for the PC and 20 percent for mobile devices. The PS4 will no longer be considered by Sony in the year mentioned. In the 2019 financial year, the proportion was still 90 percent.

During the lifetime of the PlayStation 4, more than 117 million copies of the console were shipped. By 2021, PS4 game sales were 1.5 billion. Considering that the PS4 was released in November 2013 and is thus approaching its tenth birthday, it has long since earned its retirement.
