Doom Eternal is almost exactly two years old. And currently there is no officially announced new game from the Doom inventors id Software. Still, the studio is clearly looking for new shooter staff.

The inclined shooting game aficionado asks himself: What is id Software up to? A sequel to the acclaimed Doom Eternal? A revival of the Quake brand? That would put the successful 2021 remaster of the first Quake in a completely different light. Or will it end up being a third Rage part (feels the most unlikely) or a new shooter brand?

In any case, plenty of new employees are being sought on the Zenimaxx careers page for the id location in Richardson, Texas: the advert for one recently appeared there Senior Gameplay Programmerin which a few things come together: The new employee is said to “bring along experience with first-person shooters and with the id-tech engine”, would be responsible for the “implementation of new gameplay features” for a “still unannounced video game Project”.

The request for a combat designer also sounds a lot like a fresh id shooter: the one should provide “extremely polished and memorable gameplay by creating varied combat situations that challenge the skills of the players”. The approach to new gameplay designers goes in a similar direction: “Do you fire a weapon in a game and then analyze why the shooter feeling is so good? Do you play the latest game modes and then think about why they work or not ?” 27 job applications for id Software are currently listed on the Zenimaxx portal – from Senior VFX Artist to Senior AI Programmer to Level Designer and Producer.

There has been no official announcement so far. But maybe the second QuakeCon since the takeover by Microsoft will finally bring light into the darkness…
