Summer is just around the corner and so is pickle season. As early as April, the releases are limited and as soon as the temperatures rise, the time spent in front of the computer or console decreases. But it doesn’t work entirely without video games: With Sniper Elite 5, the shooter series is supposed to be out of the house on May 26th rebellion to be continued.

To North Africa and Italy Our well-known sniper Karl Fairburne goes to France in the new part. The title is set in 1944 around D-Day. Unlike most shooters, which take place during World War II, we don’t take part in the Allied landings in Normandy or other famous battles, but infiltrate the residences and hideouts of high-ranking Nazi officers on the French north coast. We took a closer look at the third-person shooter almost a month before its release and tell you how the title compares to the predecessor and other games of the genre beats.

Sniper Elite 5 | PREVIEW | How much brain can it be this time?

Nothing really new in the West

Karl Fairburne is back: After North Africa and Italy, the sniper is now up to mischief in France.

In our two-hour session, which ran via a streaming program, we had the opportunity to play through the second mission of the campaign several times. In the relatively extensive section, there were a number of German soldiers, who we either bypassed, knocked out or eliminated as we preferred.

Our goal in the chapter is to track down secret Nazi files related to Operation Kraken in the room of the antagonist Möller. These documents contain information about the German plan to attack the United States. We also track down secrets and do side jobs.

The whole story doesn’t exactly sound innovative. But there is still some time until the release and maybe the developers have not yet revealed the exciting story sections. At least that’s what we hope, after all, the series deliberately takes a different path than the rest of the world war shooters.

That gives a headache: In the case of fatal hits, the camera perspective changes back to a kind of X-ray view, which is typical for the series.

Sniper Elite is known for one thing in particular: the detailed killcams when we inflict fatal hits on our opponents. As soon as the projectile reaches the body, the camera switches to a kind of X-ray view and shows how the bullet pierces the lungs, heart, brain and sometimes the male genitals.

Whether this depiction of violence has to be in an already brutal world war scenario, let’s leave it out. After all, it is up to the players themselves how much they enjoy shooting off an NPC’s soft parts.

However, the question arises: would the gameplay stand out from other shooters even without this feature or would it rather disappear in comparison? Presumably the latter is the case. The missions themselves are similar in structure to the grandiose stealth series Hitman.

It’s all a matter of planning

Many customization options: Not only different sights can be used on our sniper rifles, but also different grips, magazines and other attachments.

The parallels begin even before we take our first steps. First we assemble equipment for the level, choose starting location and difficulty level. The customization options are vast, but we need to unlock the gun attachments first. This works by completing missions or finding workbenches in the locations.

In addition, already earned skill points can be adjusted before the start. They are divided into three categories: combat, equipment and body. For example, we can use a medkit once we’ve been gunned down or collect ammo from dropped weapons. Also during the mission we can improve our character and distribute earned points.

The process is also similar to the Hitman series. The campaign sections play on extensive areas and entice with a number of conceivable approaches. For example, in our try-out event, we had the opportunity to choose one of three paths to get closer to Möller’s château. The three different outposts were all guarded by German soldiers, but some areas were far easier to sneak through than others.

Good planning is also necessary in the fifth part of the series, because the enemy guards quickly raise the alarm as soon as they hear suspicious noises or events.

On quiet feet or with a riot

Not only the planning is in our hands, but also the procedure. Whether we eliminate one enemy after the other with our sniper rifle or jump through the rooms with a submachine gun in Rambo-style is up to us.
