Pantamera / Returpack writes in a press release that last year 2.4 billion cans and bottles were pledged. So many cans and bottles have never before been pledged in Sweden in one year.
200 million more packages were pledged in 2021 compared with 2020. In total, the deposit rate in Sweden is now 88.2 percent. The goal is for 90 percent of the beverage packaging to be recycled. Katarina Lundell, marketing manager at Pantamera / Returpack, says about the new record:
“These are absolutely fantastic figures, not least for the environment. What we pledged in 2021 means a reduced climate footprint of over 180,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is as much as a city the size of Finspång or Tierp stands for for an entire year.”
One of the reasons why both the number of packages ordered and the degree of deposit increased is the pandemic. This is because the Swedes have chosen to holiday in Sweden. Returpack / Pantamera writes, for example, that the deposit rate in classic tourist municipalities such as Gotland and Åre increased by 18 and 25 percent during the pandemic years 2020 and 2021.
Below is an infographic that shows what the relationship looked like between sold and pledged beverage packaging and the degree of pledging between 2019 – 2021.
