Irish startup SuperWheel is developing a new type of bicycle wheel that will make cycling even more efficient and much more environmentally friendly than e-bikes.

The bottom line is this: eight to nine springs are built into the rear wheel. They are able to store the weight that the rider puts on the bike, converting it into acceleration. The wheel looks like this:

The technology is explained quite simply, but this does not make it clearer to a person with a humanitarian mindset: the springs are compressed while they are in an upright position. In a horizontal position, they are unclenched. The resulting energy is then transferred to an internal drive located inside the central hub of the wheel. This all allows you to spend less effort on spinning the wheel.

According to the SuperWheel website, this wheel is 30% more efficient than a conventional bicycle wheel. At the same time, he does not need any engines, batteries, and the range depends only on the rider’s ability to pedal. Yes, and there is no speed limit, which is the sin of most electric bikes.

Unfortunately, one of the main parameters of the wheel – its weight – is not disclosed. They just say it’s easy. However, the design itself does not look like this:

Two versions of SuperWheel are available for purchase – 700cc and 26 inches. The European price is 475 €.
