German coach Roger Schmidt is close to joining Portuguese record champions Benfica, the club announced in a statement to the Portuguese financial regulator on Wednesday. An agreement though has “not yet been formalized,” the statement said. Schmidt announced in February that he would quit as coach of PSV Eindhoven after the end of the season. The 55-year-old former Bayer Leverkusen coach, who has also worked in Austria and China, has been at Eindhoven since 2020.
