With more leeway in the screen refresh rate, Apple could not only save energy on the iPhone 14 Pro, but also offer always-on elements.

The iPhone 13 Pro from last year was the first Apple smartphone to be equipped with a “ProMotion” display with 120 Hertz and this refresh rate is expected to be repeated in the iPhone 14 Pro. However, unlike the iPhone 13 Pro, the iPhone 14 Pro expected for September this year could offer more variability in refresh rate.

Instead of being able to set the value between 10 and 120 Hertz, the LTPO panel technology in the new iPhone top model should also be able to work with one Hertz for static content, which saves energy and is already available from competitors such as Samsung or Oppo . At least that’s what the usually well-informed analyst Ross Young, managing director of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), expects.

For example, the Apple Watch Series 7 models also use LTPO displays, which enable the same battery life of up to 18 hours as previous Apple Watch models despite the always-on display, according to Macrumors.com reported. So, similar to the LTPO-equipped Android smartphones, the same technology could also show the time, date and any notifications on the screen at any time on the iPhone without the need to unlock it.

According to the report, while there are currently no credible leaks suggesting that the iPhone 14 Pro models will come with always-on display capabilities, that doesn’t mean anything just yet. Because if Apple expands the variability of the refresh rate of its “ProMotion” displays, there are no technical restrictions that speak against it. However, higher energy efficiency would definitely be possible thanks to the lower frequency.

iPhone 14 (Pro): Release in autumn

However, as usual, concrete information on this can only be expected in September when the new models are presented, when Apple holds its annual keynote to present the new generation. In the meantime, there are already numerous rumors about the new iPhones in terms of equipment, appearance and Co., while the 3rd generation iPhone SE, which was only released in March of this year, is currently already cheaper.
