Apple is slowing down recruiting geniuses at some retail stores. While it’s not actually put on hold, those involved in the matter are reporting that Genius jobs aren’t being filled after employees leave. Seen by some as a cost-cutting move, the tech giant has also withdrawn several verbal job offers for some Genius positions.

This hiring slowdown has left several tech vacancies at retail stores across the United States, Bloomberg reports. Some believe these efforts are aimed at laying off staff in places that are not as busy as they were before the pandemic.

While the Genius role has been part of the Apple Store tradition since its inception in 2001, several places have left out the famous Genius bar. Instead of serving the technical needs of customers in a separate area, geniuses roam the entire store helping customers.

In addition, the Bloomberg article states that Apple has outsourced Mac repairs to remote workshops. Despite this, Geniuses continues to troubleshoot, manage product repairs, and provide general assistance.

However, the reductions affected not only the Genius Bar. Some Apple Stores have even slowed down the recruitment of creatives, employees who teach at Apple today in Apple sessions. Sources with knowledge of the cuts say it harms customer service and shortens waiting times.
