iPadOS 16: New features, supported devices, release date and more

Traditionally, by the spring of each year, all Apple technology users begin to talk about updates to apple operating systems. Why now? Well, simply because WWDC is held at the beginning of the summer, where Apple presents updates and talks about new features to developers so that they can implement them into their applications. Of course, most often they discuss the new version of iOS. The rest of the operating systems either do not remember at all, or casually mention the need for some functions and better software optimization. What’s new in iPadOS 16

At the moment, all leaks regarding iPadOS 16 indicate the appearance of two chips: improved multitasking mode and updated notification interface.

Recently Mark Gurman of Bloomberg informed, in all new versions of operating systems, exclusive features of the Focus settings will be added. For those who are not in the know, Focus is a new feature of apple devices, thanks to which you can flexibly configure notifications and make sure that notifications come at a certain time without bothering you during the day. It is expected that this feature will be improved in new updates.

Second important chip iPadOS 16 there will be an improved multitasking mode. For several years now, iPad Pro owners have been asking Apple to adapt it to a professional line. It is not surprising, many use the firmware as the main working tool and using an enlarged iPhone to a diagonal of 12.9 is such a thing.

No, of course, we can say that the Split View mode has recently appeared here, but for many this is not enough. Personally, I’m really looking forward to the iPad version of Mission Control on the Mac. You probably know that on Macs, you can swipe up on the trackpad and see all open windows. So, on the iPad, you need to do something similar.

Now in iPadOS 15, this is implemented through a retractable curtain. You are sitting in some application, and when it becomes necessary to open a second program, just swipe from the bottom and a bar with applications opens. So, it would be nice to pump this feature a bit in the new version.

Well, think for yourself, what if I want to open an application that is not in this menu? You have to minimize the program every time, open a second one, then go back – it shouldn’t be like that!

Plus, I’d love to see the ability to run up to 4 apps on the iPad at the same time. For the iPad mini, this is probably not very relevant, but for the owners of the 12.9-inch version – very much so.

Chips iPadOS 16

Separately, I would like to talk about the iPad mini. Again, a very niche device for those who love portability. Well, imagine you are an artist or a designer and sometimes you need to add some sketches or make changes to the finished project – a mini one is the perfect solution for this case.

Every year, more and more different chips appear in the iPad, which are not at all adapted to small devices. I used the iPad mini 6 for a couple of days and it was just unbearable. The fonts are small, you can’t see anything, the programs seem squished, and stuff like that. Widgets are generally a problem, they are downright tiny – you can’t see anything. With the iPhone mini, apparently, they solved the problem by excluding it from the line, but you won’t be able to remove the mini, so you need to optimize it. We wait!

And, of course, one cannot say interactive widgets. Many iPhone owners say that Apple smartphones need this feature like air, but I don’t understand them. On the iPad, it’s a different matter. Think for yourself, the screen is large, poke inside each widget as much as you want and there are no problems. This is especially needed in diary apps like Things 3, Notes and Calendar. In general, we are waiting!

Supported Devices iPadOS 16

Currently accurate list of devices that support iPadOS 16 No, but there are some assumptions about this. Last year, Apple did not cut support for iPadOS 15 for older models, which is likely to happen now. Plus, not so long ago there were rumors that some iPhone models will not support iOS 16. iPad, perhaps the same story awaits.

If the leaks are confirmed, then the list of devices that support iPadOS 16 will look like this:

• iPad Pro 12.9 (2, 3, 4, 5th generation);
• iPad Pro 11 (1st, 2nd, 3rd generation);
• iPad Pro 10.5 (2nd generation);
• iPad Air (3rd, 4th, 5th generation);
• iPad mini (5th, 6th generation);
• iPad (6, 7, 8, 9th generation).

It turns out that these devices will not support iPadOS 16:

• iPad Pro (2015);
• iPad Air 2;
• iPad mini 4;
• iPad 5.

When will iPadOS 16 be released?

With a high degree of probability iPadOS 16 will be presented at the annual developer conference WWDC 2022, which will be held from June 6 to 10 this year.

After that, the beta testing program for developers and public beta testers will begin, and only by the fall of 2022 will we be able to test iPadOS 16 in action. It is possible that this will happen exactly in time for the presentation of the new iPhone 14.
