Putzbrunn’s biggest desert planet fan shows you the 4X real-time game from Shiro Games in this almost satirizing compilation of about 10 hours of gameplay for the category name “quarter hour”.
Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s Superman! Is it a sandbox, is it real time, no it is Dune Spice Wars! If you’re hoping Shiro Games’ game, which is about to enter Early Access, will bring old WestwoodDune 2-Serves synapses, I have to disappoint you, and it also doesn’t tell the story of Frank Herberts novel The desert planet or that of the 2021 cinematic Dune to. Rather, it takes the background of the inhospitable planet on which the most valuable substance in the universe is extracted, namely the consciousness-expanding, life-extending and future-seeing spice melange, as an occasion for a completely new scenario:
As if Imperial fiefdoms didn’t exist, some 23,000 years in the future, four factions step up to fight for supremacy on Arrakis (that’s what the planet Dune is really called2) and simply fight it out: the brave Atreides, the brutal Harkonnen, the devious smugglers and the freedom-loving Fremen. Starting from their respective capitals, each party explores the surrounding area initially covered by the “fog of war” and gets Spice production going as soon as possible. A typical 4X ambience develops with regions, resources and conflicts – only just in (pauseable) real time.
I’ve already had a number of hours of fun with Dune Spice Wars and in this “fifteen hour” I would like to introduce you to its mechanisms, but also hopefully its fascination.
Have fun!
