The first folding smartphone from Google is regularly the subject of rumors but seems to be struggling to reach the stage of finalization which would allow it to be marketed. According to the latest news, the Pixel Fold (supposed name) was to be marketed at the end of the year and offer a display that folds inwards like the Galaxy Z Fold3.

The arrival of the variant Android 12L of Google’s mobile OS, intended for tablets and foldable devices, seemed ripe for an official announcement, but The Elec site now claims that the Pixel Fold will no longer be planned for this year.

The folding smartphone would not arrive until 2023 and the only explanation given is Google would not not yet satisfied with the result to consider marketing it.

Not so easy to design a folding smartphone

The segment is still young and under exploration, although several manufacturers have recently launched their own model, often only their national market and in low volume.

Between the complexity of the design, with dual battery systems and a hinge that must be both robust and precisely aligned to ensure hundreds of thousands of manipulations in the life of the product, it is probably not easy to ignore any technical difficulties. And if it is possible to make the central fold disappear, it is even better but within everyone’s reach.

The Electric Still conjures up a smartphone that has a 7.57-inch internal flexible display with UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) protection and a 5.8-inch external display. The presence of a Google Tensor SoC remains highly probable, that of a fast charge a little less.
