Google plans to disable some of the servers in Russia that speed up the download of content, writes RBC.

The company has already notified several providers of the termination of contracts for the maintenance of Google Global Cache servers. Corresponding letters were received by “Radiosvyaz” and “MIPT Telecom”.

Rostelecom, MTS and MegaFon did not receive notification from Google. The source of the publication in one of the largest providers said that the bankruptcy of the Russian office of Google is in no way connected with the shutdown of caching servers.

Google installs Google Global Cache servers on provider networks to reduce the load on backbone networks and increase the speed of access to its own services, primarily YouTube.

If a user from Russia watches a video on YouTube, it will be stored on a local server for some time. Then, when another user opens the same video, Google will transfer it not from a foreign data center, but from the Google Global Cache server. [РБК]
