Earlier this month, Apple was seen testing a new “Tap to Pay” feature at the Apple Park visitor center. This feature allows you to use your iPhone to receive contactless payments without additional equipment using built-in NFC. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reported that Apple has begun rolling out the feature to Apple Store retail stores across the US.
It is likely that visitors to the US Apple Store will no longer see the big old POS terminals that were previously used at Apple. With the new “Tap to Pay” feature, Apple Store associates will be able to accept payment for your order through their iPhones using a credit card or Apple Pay. Gurman notes that this feature may be rolled out in stages, so it won’t be available in all of the company’s retail stores right away.
Apple’s tap to pay acceptance directly on iPhone is rolling out across its stores beginning today. Was tested earlier at the store at its HQ. More on the feature: https://t.co/rPoYgSIKXo https://t.co/XqfBOOdFQ5

In February of this year, when Apple introduced Tap to Pay for the iPhone, it said that compatible iPhones would be able to work as POS terminals in retail stores without additional hardware. The company added that small businesses would benefit the most with the technology, but did not elaborate on a specific launch timeline. Previously, iPhones could only receive contactless payments through select devices, such as the Square Reader, that would connect to the iPhone wirelessly or through a Lightning connector.
Tap to Pay requires an iPhone XS or newer model to work.
