You just got it reportedannounced that the mobile spin-off Diablo Immortal, set between Diablo 2 and 3, will also be released as a free-to-play game for PC. And as an open beta from launch on June 2nd. Check out the trailer for this announcement below.

The reasons for the strategy change as well as the consequences for the game are according to Blizzard:

  • they want to make sure that the title reaches as many players as possible, especially the particularly hard core that plays on the PC
  • at the same time, however, there was concern when bringing a game originally designed only for mobile to the PC
  • the deciding factor was the fear that fans would play it using an emulator anyway and that it would be worse than the real PC app anyway
  • there is cross-play and cross-progress across different platforms
  • fingertip and swipe controls are ported to mouse and keyboard, including WASD for character control
  • there is also controller support
  • Originally designed for mobile, large HUD elements have been scaled to a suitable size
  • in Battle.net. integrated chat system included
  • Gameplay will be a little different from classic PC Diablo
