Apple Maps has released a new Augmented Reality (AR) turn-by-turn guide to Tokyo found by Ata Distance. This feature gives you detailed information on how to get to your destination on foot.
Indeed, upon closer inspection, it turned out that Apple Maps had activated augmented reality turn-by-turn walking instructions for the Tokyo area. I don’t know if other regions like Osaka and Nagoya got it, it’s pretty hard to check without being there. I will update this post if new details of the region become available.
Ata Distance believes augmented reality walking guidance is particularly useful for indoor station maps, which are difficult to navigate in metro stations. It also states that Apple collects data at subway stations such as Shinjuku, Tokyo, and Ikebukuro.
To use this feature, users can go to Apple Maps and click the augmented reality button on the right. The app will then prompt them to scan nearby buildings with their iPhone to find out your location; once it knows where you are, directions will appear on the screen.
You can already use augmented reality walking trails in London, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, Montreal, Singapore, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington DC.
What do you think of the augmented reality walking guidance feature? Have you used it before?
