During the development of Halo Infinite, alternative multiplayer was tried, including a hero-based variant.

During the long development of video games, ideas are often collected, created, and then discarded altogether. 343 Industries went through something like this with Halo Infinite’s multiplayer as well.

An online discussion has recently surfaced regarding the whereabouts of Halo Infinite’s budget. The podcaster Chris Raygun then claimed:

“It would be crazy if one day it was revealed that 343 Industries invested a lot of money into an Overwatch clone that they worked halfway through development, only to realize it didn’t work and were forced to use the current multiplayer instead.” to design in the last two years.”

This assumption probably came from a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and was clearly exaggerated. Jason Schreier then spoke up for himself, noting:

“That’s actually coming from my article last year – yes, 343 Industries has been working on a hero-based prototype for a while.”

“I can’t remember exactly when they transitioned to the current system (and the linked post seems overblown enough to call it wrong), but I can confirm that 343 Industries has been working on various hero-based prototypes. In fact, I think there was an attempt for both PvP and PvE.”

How long it took to work on these models and how much money they cost remains unknown. All we can say with certainty is that there seemed to be good reasons not to use these prototypes as the main part of multiplayer.

It remains to be seen whether such modes are still stored on any hard drives and are perhaps being revised in cooperation with Certain Affinity in order to be submitted at a later date.
