After the IPCC report which asserts that the world is bound to exceed an average temperature rise of 1.5 degrees and is currently heading towards +3 degrees, while asserting that it is still possible to act to limit the upward trend, the European weather monitoring network Copernicus confirms that 2021 has already been a trying year in Europe.

The hottest summer ever recorded (+1 degree compared to the average), giant fires, exceptional floods…the Old Continent suffered large-scale events last year…and this would only be the beginning.

We remember the temperatures over 45 degrees observed in southern Europe last year, breaking records, with periods of drought that have continued until now and devastating fires in Italy, Greece and Turkey.

Higher up, floods caused billions of euros in damage in Germany and Belgium, while a late frost hit fruit tree crops in France and around the Mediterranean.

And projections indicate that these climatic events will multiply and intensify in the coming years. Europe is already overheating: +2 degrees Celsius, while the global average is +1.1 to +1.2 degrees Celsius, and the Copernicus report calls for action, while “climate-related extreme events are already happening in Europe“.
