I have been using Apple technology for many years, every day I open my MacBook and work on it. During this time, I have accumulated a lot of useful life hacks, which many may not know about, or which are not used on an ongoing basis.

Take Finder for example, which for many is an analogue of File Explorer: in fact, this application has many functions that I only learned about in the course of daily use.

And now I’m sharing with you. Read below how:

1. Show Recent Open Finder Windows

Using the program shortcut, you can easily view recently closed Finder windows. To see a list of them, right-click on the Finder icon in the dock.

You can also bring up a menu showing recently closed folders by left-clicking the Finder icon while holding down the Control button on your keyboard.

2. Create a folder with selected files

Let’s say you marked several files that you want to save in a separate folder. What to do next?

Not right: deselect, create a new folder, select the desired files again and drag and drop into the newly created folder.

That’s right: without deselecting, you right-click on any selected file, in the menu that appears, select “New folder with selected objects“.

3. Open multiple tabs in the same Finder window

Like a browser, you can open many tabs with the folders you need in a single Finder window.

To do this, right-click on any folder and select “Open in new tab“. Then you can simply drag and drop other folders onto “+» in the tab bar to add a new one.

You can also open folders in new tabs by double-clicking on them with the left mouse button while holding down the “Command⌘»

4. Add shortcuts to programs and folders in the Quick Access Toolbar

You can place multiple shortcuts to folders or programs in the Finder window for quick access.

To do this, simply drag the desired program or folder icon to the quick access panel while holding down the “Command⌘“.

To remove a shortcut from the panel, also hold down the “Command⌘» and drag the shortcut to any free space on the desktop.

5. Use “Quick View” in Slideshow Mode

Quick View is one of the most convenient Finder features. Everyone knows that if you select a file and click “Space”, then a window with information about the file or a preview of the picture will open if you have selected the picture.

But few people know that if you select a few pictures or PDF files, you can run a real slideshow in full screen without any third-party programs. To do this, just click “Space» with the key pressed «Option⌥»

6. Show separate folders and files when sorting by name

If you apply file sorting by name, then the Finder will arrange them interspersed with folders, focusing only on the names, but not on the type.

But if you go to the Finder settings, go to the “Add-ons‘ and check the box next to ‘In windows when sorted by name”, then the system will separate folders and files when sorting them by name.

7. Create a smart folder with files of a certain type

This feature is very handy if you (like me) have different types of files scattered in different folders. They can be assembled into one smart folder in a few clicks.

For this you need to press File – New Smart Folderin the search, set the parameter by which the system will collect all files of the desired type together (in my case, I entered the Wav file extension in the search) and then click the Save button.

Done, all the necessary files of a certain type are now collected in one folder automatically.

8. Lock the file so you don’t accidentally delete it

You can add protection to any file in MacOS using the file lock option. Useful if you are afraid of accidentally deleting or renaming it.

To do this, select the file, right-click on it, select “Properties”, in the window that appears, go to the tab “Main‘ and check the box next to ‘Protection“.

Here are the most useful Finder features that help me out every day. I am sure that now it will also be much more convenient for you to work with files. Still, macOS is a cool operating system, right?
