Things haven’t been running smoothly for Hunt: Showdown in recent updates. The meta had already rocked hard towards shotgun slugs and sniper rifles before, but new ugly bugs were craning their necks with version 1.8.
The performance has become a good bit shaky and the servers sometimes didn’t want to do the same as the players. In short: Crytek has a lot of work to do. And you want to start with Patch 1.8.1 on the test servers.
The developer apologized in a stream for the state of 1.8 in a live stream and has apparently already localized some reasons for this. For the future they want to test more again, especially on the PC test servers and generally give more time to patches and fixes. The server problems have top priority for the developer and various causes have already been identified.
The issues caused anger mostly because they threw players into a live event where there were in-game rewards to be earned.
New monetization system for Hunt Showdown
First, Cryteks described changes to the monetization of the game. The aim is to reduce reliance on base game sales to ensure future content development for years to come. Which makes sense considering the game has been around for a couple of years now and most prospective buyers should own it by now.
In addition, the events will be revised so that they are no longer so monotonous. However, at the end you want to promise a legendary hunter again, which was not the case last time.
Hunt’s new quest system in version 1.8.1
The daily and weekly quests also make way for a new system. There should now be “customizable” quests, presumably so that you are not forced too much into doing things you don’t feel like doing. “Kill 10 meatheads with just shooting”? No thanks!
Instead, you now choose from a variety of things to accomplish in matches and receive Stars as a reward in addition to the old rewards of weapons and consumables. You can then use them to unlock bigger rewards. There will be a reset every Wednesday. That should involve players more actively.
Crytek admitted that this system also needs a lot of work and that community feedback will be taken into account.
New zombies for Hunt Showdown
Another important change for version 1.8.1 are two new variations of the basic zombies that will be introduced along with the new quest system. A lantern zombie carries – what wonders – a lantern that is either on or off. Depending on the state in which he hits you, he will set you on fire or create a puddle of oil on the ground, which you can then ignite with fire. It is theoretically possible to set up your own fire barriers in tactically sensible places.
Also, the Lanterns – and Torch Zombies’ torches too – now ignite barrels and oil trails, which should add a little more unpredictability. With a shot in the arm, the zombies drop the object they are holding, which in the case of torches and lanterns has tactical implications.
The pistol grunt is also very interesting. He carries a randomly drawn pistol. He can’t use it, but if he hits you with it, a shot is fired that can be heard from afar and reveals your position.
If you want to go undetected, these enemies must be taken out quietly from a distance or avoided altogether. Crytek obviously expects that Leisetreter will be encouraged to move more. However, there are plenty of opportunities to avoid this, so I’m not sure how often it will really matter. In any case, different zombie types are always nice. More are to follow.
Other new features in 1.8.1
Also, you can now hear when shell casings hit the ground after being ejected, which is a nice little touch. It even sounds different depending on where the sleeve lands. Wood, metal or straw all have their own sound.
For the pistols with brass knuckles variants, the melee damage is now almost identical to that of a normal brass knuckles and the dumdum ammunition for the nitro is now called shredder.
There is also a climbing exploit that allows you to see and shoot through walls. We’re working hard to get rid of it.
The third-person bug where you could be seen crouching while aiming over cover has already been fixed with the upcoming patch.
The 2D replay system is still planned, but something for later. Too bad.
Finally, Crytek introduced a few new legendary weapons and hunters, of which the Springfield Compact called Splinter looks great:
