Top Gun: Maverick arrives on May 26, 2022 in German cinemas – you can read our film review here – and is already making a name for itself with some very bizarre preparations for shooting. In preparation for the sequel to the original Top Gun flick from 1986, there were veritable boot camps that the cast had to struggle through. The aim was to film action-packed flight scenes in real fighter jets that are actually in the air. Accordingly, the preparation was rigorous.
Of fainting and throwing up
In an interview with Gamespot, Miles Teller, one of the actors in Top Gun: Maverick, about the hardships of filming and its preparation. “Some actors, completely independent of what they tell you, vomited on the first day and vomited on the last day‘ Teller recounted.’Of the six pilots we had, three never threw up or passed out“. Teller himself does not speak about which of the two groups he belonged to.
Considering the immense G-forces that a human normally has to endure during fighter jet maneuvers, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. The cast was gradually introduced to the g-forces of the fighter jets with smaller and less powerful flying machines. Survival training in case you end up in the sea was also part of the preparation for the film.
With authenticity to success?
In any case, the claims seem to be one Tom Cruise currently worthwhile. Finally, the early reviews of Maverick are pretty positive. The already impressive flight sequences, which probably shine through their authenticity, also contribute to this.
Cruise himself emphasized in an interview with Empire magazine that he would not have been interested in making a CGI sequel to Top Gun. This is exactly what he conveyed to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and obviously Cruise’s wish was fulfilled. Now the question remains how much Top Gun: Maverick will be able to bring in at the box office.
