In a report released Tuesday, the Center for Strategic Organizations (SOC) said that in 2021,Nearly one-fifth of Amazon delivery drivers injured, a 40 percent increase from the previous year’s injury rate. The SOC, made up of union federations such as the International Federation of Truck Drivers and the Service Industry Employees International Union, analyzed data submitted to OSHA by Amazon and delivery partners in 2021.
now,Amazon increasingly relies on fast-growing network of third-party couriers, pick up packages from its warehouses and deliver them to customers’ doorsteps. The SOC report found that,Amazon contracted delivery drivers are nearly 2.5 times more likely to be injured than non-Amazon delivery drivers. In 2021, one in seven Amazon drivers will be seriously injured and either unable to do their normal work or forced to miss work altogether.
According to the report,Amazon’s ‘runaway high quota’ is the main cause of high injury rates for delivery drivers. According to a class-action lawsuit filed by one of Amazon’s delivery partners in Wyoming, Amazon expects each van to deliver 350-400 packages per day, which equates to a delivery every 1 to 2 minutes without a break.
