CNBC has been in contact with sources who state that Airbnb plans to stop offering accommodation in China soon. Airbnb launched its service in China in 2016 but is said to have faced tough competition from local competitors in the Chinese market.
Sometime this summer, Airbnb will stop offering accommodation in China, according to CNBC’s sources. However, Airbnb will continue to offer Chinese users the opportunity to book accommodation via Airbnb when traveling abroad. The company is also said to keep its office in Beijing and the plan is that about a hundred of the employees there will be allowed to keep their jobs.
Airbnb has so far not commented on CNBC’s information that it is about to stop offering accommodation in China. Airbnb has previously stated that the Chinese market accounts for about one percent of the company’s sales.
