Apple is suspending MacBook shipments. How long will it take and why

Apple is trying to deliver its gadgets by all means: remember the story when even empty boxes had to be transported during a pandemic? True, if there are no goods in warehouses, then there is nothing to carry: it became known that American buyers encountered problems when ordering a MacBook. The company politely offered to wait for its customers for several months, and the other day it again shifted the delivery date of its computers: this applies not only to laptops, but also to iMac, Mac Studio and even Studio Display. Echo of sanctions or shortage of chips? Let’s try to figure it out.

While last year’s buyers faced delays in iPhone shipments, now it’s Apple’s turn as well, with 16-inch MacBook Pro customers who ordered in February this year experiencing the most problems. According to the site 9to5mac, several readers in early May reported delays on laptops with custom configurations. Orders have been delayed before, but they recently received another email from Apple saying they would have to wait until late June/early July. True, the transfers did not end there: in the end Macbook Pro delivery has been postponed until August.

It is noteworthy that if you change the characteristics in the configurator on the site, for example, the amount of RAM or storage, then the delivery time will increase until August 8th. At the same time, stock MacBook models are promised to be delivered much earlier – on July 28. According to users, the worst thing is the availability of goods from Apple itself. True, at the same time custom versions MacBook Pro available from resellers in stock – for example, from Amazon.

Along with the MacBook Pro, Mac Studio and Studio Display will also go on sale in the official Apple store in August. Standard iMac models are available immediately, but if you customize your computer, shipping will also be pushed back to August. The same situation with the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air M1. Probably, in this whole situation, the delay in deliveries is due to lack of miniLED components: problems have been dragging on since last year, and with the passage of time, the situation, apparently, has not changed.

Last year, miniLED panel maker TSMT faced a shortage of printed circuit boards and adhesives, which had a negative impact on the production of devices that use them. Also considering that MacBook shipping issues arise when customizing a laptop, there are certain difficulties with the production of chips, RAM and other components. In addition, the availability of goods from other sellers indicates that Apple is paying more attention to maintaining inventory in retail than in its own online store.

Despite the suspension of deliveries to Russia, MacBooks are still available in Russian retail in a variety of configurations, but every day there are fewer of them, and stores are gradually starting to close. Not so long ago, the company again reported record profits, but with a small caveat for the future: Apple, according to Tim Cook, expects a drop in revenue in the near future by several billion dollars at once. The head of the company did not specify the reasons, but everything is clear: the geopolitical situation, the instability of exchange rates in different regions of the planet, microchip deficiency and the company’s latest innovations, which, to put it mildly, are not impressive. As a result, supply chains are disrupted and goods become more expensive.

To all the above problems, we must add the echoes of the pandemic: China is still fighting it, introducing lockdowns in entire cities. Assembly shops are in a “bubble” and do not suffer much, but factories do not have time to produce components for gadgets in full: after the restrictions are lifted, it takes time to return to the previous production volumes. It may even affect iPhone 14 release dates. However, you should not worry: so far the problems are local in nature, and the head of Apple has not made any statements.
