Recommendations for fast charging an iPhone or iPad often involve using a 20W power adapter from Apple or a similar third party. But what about using a more powerful USB-C charger from your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air? Find out which iPhones and iPads can be quickly charged using Apple MacBook Chargers or similar third-party chargers.

Fast charging provides about 50% battery charge in 30 minutes. But the new USB-C to Lightning cable and Apple’s 20W charger cost $40. Third-party options cost less, but what about what you already have?

The good news is that modern iPhones and iPads work with all MacBook USB-C chargers up to the 96W model (note that Apple does not recommend using a 140W USB-C charger with iPhone and iPad).

While it may seem risky, using Apple’s more powerful USB-C chargers is safe because your iPhone or iPad determines the power it receives, not the charger. Apple even conducts its own testing of its entire range of USB-C power adapters.

Note. Depending on the current battery capacity, your device will consume different levels of power. For example, a battery with 10% charge will consume more power than a battery with 80% charge.

Apple says the following iOS devices are compatible with its 18W, 20W, 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W, and 96W fast charging adapters:

iPhone 8/8 Plus and later iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation and later) iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later) iPad Pro 10.5-inch iPad Air 3rd generation and later iPad mini 5 -generation and newer

Apple notes that you can use its USB-C to Lightning cable or that “a comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD)” will also work, as will Anker’s Powerline series.

Whether you’re looking for a more flexible USB-C charger or want an extra one, Anker’s 36W Dual USB-C Charger and Satechi’s Triple Port 66W GaN USB-C Charger are great choices for fast iPhone charging and iPad at the same time.

Since the iPhone 13 Pro Max can draw up to 27W of power, using 30W or higher power adapters will give you the fastest charging times.
