Nvidia’s keynote at Computex 2022 was more of a disappointment to gamers than a brief announcement, focusing on big ideas like AI training and enterprise data centers and cloud gaming. Together with Asus, Nvidia announces the first gaming monitor with 500 Hz. The name “Asus ROG Swift 500 Hz” is probably still a working title.

During the keynote, Nvidia announced the new “Asus ROG Swift 500Hz Gaming Monitor,” which would be the fastest refresh rate out there. Reports about a panel with 480 Hz were already doing the rounds, but this has not yet been presented in a market-ready model. Most high refresh rate monitors are closer to the 170Hz mark, or towards the higher end of the scale, at 360Hz. So 500Hz would be a new maximum for a gaming monitor.

The Asus ROG Swift 500 Hz has a TN panel in 1080p, i.e. Full HD, with a 24-inch screen diagonal. While TN panels are fairly old technology, they have very low latency, which fits with the rest of the theme of this high refresh rate screen. Nvidia called it the “lowest latency, highest refresh rate G-Sync esports display ever made” in the announcement. That should be true, but the difference to 360 Hz shouldn’t even be a millisecond. The scaler lag is already as low as possible at 360 Hz and for comparison: the image build-up at 360 Hz is 2.78 ms and at 500 Hz 2 ms.

The monitor was unveiled in conjunction with Nvidia’s Reflex Analyzer software, which integrates directly into games like Fortnite and Apex Legends to reduce latency. This feature is not new in itself and is already present in the 240 Hz and 360 Hz models with G-Sync.

Nvidia already announced other alternatives at the CES in January: A monitor with a 27-inch diagonal, WQHD resolution and 360 Hz should be more interesting for the mainstream than this high-frequency model purely tailored to e-sports.

We don’t have pricing information on the Asus ROG Swift 500Hz gaming monitor just yet, but given its unique status and the fact that it’s being marketed to pro esports gamers, we’re not expecting a cheap screen. If we had to guess, the price at launch is around 600 to 900 euros.
