IT House April 24 news, in a video posted on the Microsoft Surface YouTube channel, Microsoft showed the repairability of the Surface Laptop Studio. This 14-minute long demo video shows the device in its entirety tearing down and introduces some of the parts that can be replaced with very few tools.
Of course, Microsoft also gave a warning, saying that users should seek professional help when repairing their devices, and be cautious when doing these things themselves. The tools in this video include spatulas, tweezers and Torx Plus with 3IP and 6IP tips screwdriver. Microsoft even recommends using an anti-static wrist strap to avoid burning out the internal components. Microsoft also mentions that guidance can be found in the Service Guide on the Microsoft Support site.
The video shows that to get inside the Laptop Studio, you need to remove the rubber feet and the tape around the bottom lip of the device, and you will see seven screws, as well as two screws on the brim. Removing these screws allows you to pull out the backplane and access the SSD for replacement, or disconnect the power supply (with just two screws), or remove the battery cable and then remove the battery.
With the backplane and SSD removed, Microsoft further points out that it’s not just those parts that the device is serviceable,The fan, motherboard and display module are all removable with no hidden adhesives or glue.
The repair video goes on to show the replacement of the display module (4:50 minutes), Surface port and audio jack (7:04 minutes), fans (8:43 minutes), subwoofer (9:51 minutes). Even the motherboard was removed (min 10:47), along with the cooling module (min 11:43), showing that Microsoft has visual guidance (via stickers) showing where the screws might be covered. Microsoft then mentions at the end of the video that during the reassembly process, removing the SSD puts it into repair mode, so the device won’t power up until the charger is connected.
It can be seen that many parts in the Surface Laptop Studio can be replaced, but in order to access the device, the user will need to replace the rubber feet and tape.
IT House understands that Microsoft said in October 2021 that a third-party organization will study the environmental and social impacts of increasing consumers’ choices for repairing devices. Microsoft is also partnering with iFixit to provide authorized technicians with Surface repair tools to make device repairs faster and more efficient. The new Surface Laptop SE in Education is also a fairly repairable device, made mostly of plastic.
